The most remarkable fabric store in town

Tourists in Amsterdam, on a walk from Dam Square to the Rembrandthouse, will probably come along this fabric store in the Nieuwe Hoogstraat 31. It is my favorite.

In its kind, this shop is one of the oldest in town, dating from 1920, when A. Boeken began his business in fabrics and supplies. The firm is still run by the Boeken family.

This quarter of the town from old has housed a number of traders in fabrics, both wholesale and retail, but except the Boeken store, they all are gone nowadays.

The shop's inside space is rather limited. Actually it is a combination of three originally separate shops, interconnected with breakthroughs in the walls in between.

The store's interior may be limited in terms of room to maneuver, its stock is huge.

There is a wide variety of woven fabrics, piled up to the ceilings, a large collection of faux leather and latex, and all kinds of buttons, zippers, ribbons and ruffles.

Not surprisingly, the shop is frequented by students of Amsterdam's fashion academies and others in the Amsterdam world of fashion.

When some time ago the Netherlands had the dutch edition of Project Catwalk on tv, the participants had to buy their materials in this store.

Customers frequenting this shop in general know what they are looking for, although it may take time to actually find one's item of choice among the wide range of supply.

display in one of the shop's windows

Tourists may enjoy the display in the shops street window. I would advise those who would like to take a look at the interior, to do this in combination with buying something. Easy transportable, small and pretty items are abundantly available.

NOTE; Because of renovation, in 2013 the shop temporarily has moved to another address in the same street. Early march 2014 they returned to their old address.
